Drilling Performance Metrics Study

The Drilling Performance Metrics study by NSB Energy was commissioned to provide a synopsis of historical drilling performance in the Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) offshore for the global industry. The results of a drilling metrics study were released in August 2016.

The reporting is not a drilling offset study, but rather a compilation of historical reports presented in a clear, comparable, and easily accessible format. This report provides a summary of well data and drilling metrics obtained for 112 of the 167 exploration wells that have been drilled offshore NL since 1966.

The study is a comprehensive compilation of data from publicly available reports on exploration wells drilled in offshore NL. Its footprint covers the most northerly points of offshore Labrador, to the waters comprising the southern extents of the province’s jurisdiction. This vast area has been divided into four separate regions for ease of analysis and comparison purposes: Labrador (with Labrador North and Labrador South sub-regions), Eastern Newfoundland, Jeanne d’Arc Basin, and South Newfoundland.

The individual reporting provides analysis of 112 exploration wells drilled in the NL offshore. Through drilling performance indicators such as rate of penetration (ROP), water depth, total drilled depth, drilling fluid type, and amount of non-productive time (NPT), this study provides the ability to compare drilling metrics of individual wells in a particular region, but also compare the separate regions themselves.

This report also provides a review of the drilling rigs that have been used in Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore, research on a number of drilling rigs currently available, and analysis on how each rig type could perform.

nsb_logo Our Exploration Strategy System (NESS) has been used to facilitate the use of this vast dataset. This system was developed in 2013 to capture insights from data collected within the exploration team. The NESS system is a web-based, interactive database or Geographic Information System, which includes the drilling performance data presented in this report as well as other geographic and geophysical data of the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore.
